2020 Mission to Kampong Spew Province - January 8 - 20, 2020

CHPPA delivers health education and integrative, primary medical care to the people of Cambodia. This is a unique opportunity for acupuncturists to provide a high volume of treatment for pain and a range of other problems as part of an interdisciplinary care team.

In January 2019, a pain management team consisting of a physical therapist, an osteopath, and an acupuncturist (i.e., Tom!) treated more than 100 patients each day. Other providers included nurses, dentists, pharmacists, pediatricians, and surgeons. Local Buddhist monks assisted with registration and primary care doctors provided triage for up to 1000 patients who lined up each day for much-needed medical care. CHPPA’s mission is purely humanitarian, not religious-based.

CHPPA’s patients are primarily small farmers. The older ones survived the the Khmer Rouge and the killing fields in the 1970’s. Malnutrition is still common.

One woman reported frequent stomach pains.

“What makes your stomach feel better?” I asked.

Her reply: “Food.”

We offered her some bread and a bottle of water before her treatment, which she ate and drank and with great concentration. She, and many other weakened patients, responded well to very gentle treatments - sometimes just Pyonex press needles.

after the genocide, healing.

CHPPA was founded by two doctors (below left, Seang Seng and Song Tan, right). They were in medical school in Cambodia when the Khmer Rouge took power and closed the universities and the hospitals. Both miraculously survived years in the killing fields and manged to emigrate to the US. They return annually to provide medical care and education in Cambodia. During CHPPA’s mission trips, they also mentor young Cambodian medical students.

Translation is provided by Cambodian medical students.

Cambodia is home to one of the world’s oldest and greatest civilizations. CHPPA offers the opportunity to travel and explore Angkor Wat and other important sites at the conclusion of the mission. Recommended!
